Jamil Khan Joins Daffodil’s Journalism, Media and Communication – JMC Department

Dr. Abdul Kabil Khan, more commonly known in the media as Jamil Khan, has joined Daffodil International University (DIU) as an Associate Professor at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMC). 

He has started teaching both in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the JMC department of DIU from this ongoing Spring 2023 term.

Dr. Jamil is widely considered to be the pioneer of mobile journalism in Bangladesh for his contribution to promoting a mobile-first strategy in mainstream newsrooms. He introduced a full-fledged ‘Mobile Journalism’ course for the first time as a Major at a university in Bangladesh.

Before joining DIU this February 2023, Dr. Jamil khan had previously been associated with the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh as its Assistant Professor since October 2019.

He has taught several courses in his tenure at ULAB starting from the freshmen course “Introduction to Journalism”, “Media & the Law” to his flagship major course of “Mobile Journalism”, “Online Journalism”, “Investigative Journalism” and the graduate course “Social Media Management” & “Research Methodology” for the student of Masters in communication.

Prior to joining ULAB, Dr. Jamil has experience teaching at the University of Dhaka as an Adjunct Faculty at the Mass Communication and Journalism department and also served as a Specialist in Mobile Journalism at the country’s top media organization, Prothom Alo. And jointly with Sabbir Ahmed, he introduced the country’s first mobile-based news station, Bangladesh Times.

The first comprehensive book on mobile journalism in the country, “Mobile Journalism: Journalism of Our Time,” was written by Dr. Jamil. 

From 2014 to 2017, he was a faculty member of the Department of Mass Communications at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. He has an experience as a visiting lecturer at Uppsala University, Sweden in 2011 & the University of Korea in 2013.

Over these years, Dr. Jamil has conducted seminars – workshops on digital means of journalism across the nation and abroad at places like the “Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC), and so on. Apart from his university students, he has trained more than a thousand students and journalists in Bangladesh and abroad thus far

In addition to training and teaching, he also put a significant contribution to researching for the betterment of Media. His principal areas of interest in terms of research include new media development and communication, the impact of technology on journalism, mobile journalism, convergence journalism, the impact of social media and citizen journalism, and the integration of social media with mainstream mass media.
